নিম্নোক্ত ক্ষেত্রে Verb এর সাথে ing যুক্ত হয়

with a view to, addicted to, look forward to, confessed to, would you mind etc এর পরে v1 + ing হয়।
For example: I went to a library with a view to buying a pen.
present/past/future এ চলমান কাজ বুঝালে v1+ing হয় ।
For example: He was going through the forest.
present participle or gerund হিসেবে v1 + ing হয় ।
For example: Learning English,we can get a good job.
prepositional phrase এর পরে v1 + ing বসে ।
For example: Deforestation means of cutting down trees.

Phrasal Verbs

কোনো কোনো Verb-এর পর নির্দিষ্ট কিছু Preposition বা Adverb বসালে উক্ত Verb-এর অর্থের পরিবর্তন ঘটে । Preposition বা Adverb সহ ঐসব Verb-কে Phrasal verbs বা Group verts বলে। যেমন— Bring অর্থ আনয়ন করা কিন্তু Bring up মানে লালন-পালন করা। এখানে Bring up হচ্ছে Phrasal verb বা Group verb.

Phrasal verb (যাকে Group verb-ও বলা হয়) হলো এমন একটি বিশেষ ধরনের verb, যা একটি সাধারণ verb-এর সাথে একটি Preposition অথবা Adverb (বা উভয়ই) যুক্ত হয়ে গঠিত হয়। এই সমন্বয়ের ফলে মূল verb-টির অর্থ সম্পূর্ণ পরিবর্তিত হয়ে একটি নতুন অর্থ প্রকাশ পায়।

১. গঠন (Formation):

Structure: Main verb + Preposition / Adverb.
Example: Look (তাকানো) + After (পিছনে/পরে) = Look after (দেখা শোনা করা)।
Example: Give (দেওয়া) + Up (উপরে) = Give up (পরিত্যাগ করা)।

২. Phrasal verb-এর প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্যসমূহ:

এটির অর্থ মূল verb থেকে সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা হয়।
একই verb-এর সাথে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন Preposition যুক্ত হয়ে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন অর্থ তৈরি করতে পারে।
- Example (Look):
  - Look for: খোঁজা (Search).
  - Look into: তদন্ত করা (Investigate).
  - Look down upon: ঘৃণা করা (Hate/Despise).

৩. প্রকারভেদ (Types):

ক) Transitive Phrasal verbs:

এদের অর্থ প্রকাশের জন্য একটি Object-এর প্রয়োজন হয়।

Example: You should give up smoking. ('Smoking' এখানে Object)।

খ) Intransitive Phrasal verbs:

এদের কোনো Object-এর প্রয়োজন হয় না।

Example: The car broke down. (গাড়িটি বিকল হয়ে গেল)।

গ) Separable Phrasal verbs:

কিছু ক্ষেত্রে verb এবং Preposition-এর মাঝখানে Object বসানো যায়।

Example: Turn the light off. (অথবা Turn off the light)।

৪. সচরাচর ব্যবহৃত কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Phrasal verbs:

Bring up	লালন-পালন করা	He was brought up by his aunt.
Call off	তুলে নেওয়া / বাতিল করা	The strike was called off.
Carry on	চালিয়ে যাওয়া	Please carry on your work.

Give in	বশ্যতা স্বীকার করা	The rebels finally gave in.
Keep up	বজায় রাখা	Try to keep up your good health.
Put out	নেভানো (আগুন)	Put out the lamp.
Run over	গাড়ি চাপা পড়া	The boy was run over by a truck.
Set up	স্থাপন করা	They set up a new school.
Take after	দেখতে সদৃশ হওয়া	She takes after her mother.

৫. বাক্য গঠনের ক্ষেত্রে সতর্কতা:

Phrasal verb-এর মূল verb-টি Tense এবং Subject অনুযায়ী পরিবর্তিত হয়, কিন্তু Preposition-টি একই থাকে।
- Present: He looks after his parents.
- Past: He looked after his parents.
একাধিক Preposition-ও থাকতে পারে (যেমন: Put up with - সহ্য করা)।
